Theme Clock Lite FAQ

Theme Clock (Free) is a free iPhone app, a clock with 10 individual stunning themes. Each theme has been designed and inspired by the many digital display devices in consumer-electronics, including: Light Emitting Diode (LED), Vacuum Fluorescent Display (VFD) and Liquid Crystal Display (LCD).Theme Clock is ideal used as a night stand or desk clock. It is currently available on Apple’s App Store. You can download it via iTunes, iPhone or iPod Touch. When the app is loaded on your device, simply swipe left to right to select a theme, double tap to see all the available settings. If you have any questions, post it here and we will be happily answer them all.Any suggestions and feedback are more than welcome. It will help us to improve our app.NOTE: Theme Clock works on the iPhone and iPod Touch with iPhone OS 2.0. However, it won’t change any of your existing applications or software on your iPhone or iPod touch for security and usability reasons. All iPhone apps from the App Store have a “sandbox” limitation. They are different from apps that runs on other devices.

I like the app for theme clock. it says its easy to use and it says so many options to change but then no instructions how to change the options. I thought I remember reading somewhere about holding finger on screen for a few seconds to have options show up, or two fingers on screen at same time but nothing happens????

if its so easy to use why cant I get to the options? Would be nice to have some decent instructions, at least posted on the website.

Maybe I’m blind I’ll keep looking. Please provide some instructions.
    Thanks much.

App looks great. Marketing, not so much. The lame trick of listing all the popular apps on your page, just to appear on any searches for those apps, does not reflect well on your company. It smacks of spam emails, and makes me deeply suspicious of you.

  3. 3
    Anna Says:

    @Scott

Thanks for your comment. There is a pop up with the instructions when you first load the app. Also the loading screen has the sliding instruction underneath the theme clock icon. We thought that will make things a bit simpler by not providing the popup every time, which can be quite annoying.

Thanks for your comment, we will add it in our app description. Here are the instructions:
    * Swipe left or right to change themes
    * Double tap screen to load up configuration screen.

If you have any suggestion to make it clear, we would like to hear from you.

    @Neil

We completely agree with your comment. All searches should be relevant. We also have a Web development background, so we understand the use of Ethical SEO practices.
We started iPhone app development not too long ago. There are a lot of things we still need to learn. We recently noticed a few apps using the listing technique called “App Jacking”. As part of our research for a better understanding of the app store we attempted to trial it’s use.

To be honest, we don’t like this technique as we believe in the quality of our work. We are happy so many people liked our app.

We have now removed the list of top apps from our app description.

    Thanks for your constructive feedback.

    Mark Says:

Love the design, simple but it’s clear attention to detail has been given.

Would you mind telling me how you manage to get those effects on the fonts that you use? e.g are they some kind if stylized fonts or do you use quartz or openGL to render the effects.

  13. 13
    Anna Says:

Thanks for your appreciation, not everyone noticed how much details there are.

Sure. They are not fonts, we manually created all the segments and visual effects using vector tools and graphic editing software. We didn’t use Quartz or OpenGL. Imagine coding all those effects, it would be a nightmare.

    Xargon Says:

Sometimes the clock stucks and I can see the same time over and over

  15. 15
    Anna Says:

    @Xargon

Hi, I am glad you posted this!

When you see the same time over and over, do you mean you see the same time again after you shut down and clock then re-launch it again?

We haven’t been able to reproduce the time freeze no matter how we try. We tried with a few devices with different OS versions in various ways, including locking the device, let it automatically go into auto-lock, leaving it run for 24 hours. No luck at all.

Can you please list the steps what did you do to produce that bug?
    e.g.
    1. What clock setting did you have
    2. How long did you leave the clock running for
    3. How long did you leave your device running for
    4. Any other activities like how often do you change the themes and settings etc
    5. Are there any apps you were running before you run the clock. If so, what is it?
    6. What device (i.e, iPod Touch 1st Gen or 2nd Gen, iPhone 2G or 3G) are you using and what OS version?

We are currently investigation this issue. It will be great if you (or anyone else) can give us some clue how to reproduce it. It will help a lot.

Also, the next update (added portrait mode) has been submitted to the app store. It should be available to download within 3 days if everything is fine with Apple. If the update fixed the issue, please do let us know as well.

    Thanks.

I’ve had the same problem Xargon describes.

In settings, all but show status bar and auto-lock are on.

Tried glow clock and red led, both are stuck.

The first time I noticed it, it had been running for about 10 minutes, then I tried rebooting, and had it running for 3-4 minutes with the same problem.

    I’m on a non-jailbroken iPhone 3g, running 2.2.1.

I’ve enjoyed having the nice looking clock on my iPhone. Only downside now – I’ve run out of space and want to remove it temporarily … but when I deselect it in iTunes and run Sync, it still remains on my iPhone! Apple not being much help either. Anyone else got the same problem?

  24. 24
    Anna Says:

    Hi Martin,

Sorry for the late reply. I was away for a few days.

There are quite a few people having problems removing apps from their iPhone or iPod Touch. Here is a way that works:

You can remove the app from both iTunes and the iPhone, then sync. This does a complete removal of the app from your iPhone. Of course, you will have to re-download the app again when you want it back.

NOTE: To remove the app from iTunes, click on “Applications” under the Library section, right click on the app you want to remove and delete.

The update release (v1.1.1) is now 2 MB smaller. If that makes a difference, you might be able to just update the app without removing it.

Hope this helps. If not, do post again.

    Tjalling Bal Says:

NIce app, and I use it quite often (soundengineer) for live performances, music and theatre. really clear and easy for use on stage! But since OS 3.0, the auto-lock “off” doesn’t work anymore, and that’s what I really liked about it… No buttons to push and always time at hand. Hoping for an update. If the autolock functions again, it gains the full 5 stars. And yes, the app looks really neat!

    Keep up the good work!

    Ivo Says:

Hello, I wanted to know why I have to experiece a problem with this app – I have os 3.0 and after useing it about 1 week, know I cannot use it propperly – after start during 2-3 seconds the app closes by itself.

  30. 30
    Anna Says:

    Hi everyone,

Sorry for the late reply. I have been off the project for a few months now dealing with personal stuff.

    @Dale
The autolock is for the iPhone to automatically go into sleep mode. It saves battery because the screen is off while the app is still running. Having the screen on is pretty expensive for the battery.

    @Tjalling
I’ll get on fixing it as my next priority. Thanks for letting us know.

    @Ivo
Not sure why it happens after a week but not immediately after the OS 3.0 upgrade (assuming you have autolock turned on within the app). I am on my way investigating it. I will post it here once it is fixed.

    edberg Says:

Great ! But can we have others themes : like flip maybe ?

  32. 32
    Anna Says:

    Thanks for your post!

We did have a few more themes designed, including a flip clock, but we only selected 9 due to limitation of the memory on the devices. So far we haven’t seen any clocks manage to have more than 6 themes that are very different running on devices up to iPhone 3G.

However, we are now considering it for the iPhone 3GS.

  33. 33
    edberg Says:

    Ok thanks, I’ve got a 3GS. I’m waiting for new version :-)

  34. 34
    pitcaver Says:

I love the app, as the previous app I was using for this would not allow the native alarm to work. I do however, have a problem with the auto-lock off- it does not seem to work. The iphone goes dim and when I wake up from sleep, I have to remember to hit the button. This defeats the purpose of the app for me. If this is fixed, 5 stars from me.

  35. 35
    Anna Says:

    Hi Pitcaver,

Can you tell us what OS you are using? We have tested the app on OS 3.0 on the iPhone 3G and we didn’t have a problem with the auto-lock off feature.

An updated version V1.1.2 of Theme Clock (Free) has been uploaded and waiting for approval. This version has been tested on both the 3G and 3GS. If everything goes well on the approval process, it should be on the app store within 2-3 days.

    Don Stevens Says:

    Hi,
Great product! I have a request though, I put my beloved iPhone in a cradle, and would like to have the option to start the clock in portrait mode and keep it there, so it looks cool in the cradle. Otherwise, I have to start the app, remove the phone from the cradle, and (seemingly) slap the phone around to make it go into portrait mode.

    Thanx!

    Don

  37. 37
    Don Stevens Says:

    Hi,
Also, can you have an option to make it override the screensaver?

    Thanx,

    Don

  38. 38
    Anna Says:

    Hi Don,

Thanks for your comment. It always feel good when people like our product! :)

Are you using OS 3.0? There is a bug that the clock won’t rotate to portrait mode if it starts in that mode. With the updated version (V1.1.2) of the app, which should be available on the app store very soon, you should be able to rotate your iPhone to landscape then back to portrait again to do what you want. We are in the process of fixing this bug so the clock can start in portrait mode. This fix should be released in V1.1.3.

Unfortunately it is not possible for any apps from the app store to override the screen saver (assuming you mean when your iPhone is locked) for security reasons by Apple. This is one of the very-nice-to-have features that you can see on other phones, just not the iPhone and iPod Touch unfortunately!

  39. 39
    Don Stevens Says:

    Hi,
Thanx for the promt reply, it means a lot. You need to take a look at an app calle Clock! by GoldenPlum, it overrides the screensaver, meaning when you start the app the screensaver never comes on.

    Thanx,

    Don

  40. 40
    Don Stevens Says:

    Oops, yes I have a 3G S with the 3.0 software…..

  41. 41
    Anna Says:

It seems you mean override the screensaver the same as the auto-lock feature? The auto-lock feature seems to be not working for the OS 3.0 for some people (though when we tested it on 3 of our iPhones, including the 3GS, and it seems fine). When you updated to V1.1.2, go to the settings and turn auto-lock off. This should prevent the phone’s screen turning off.

Let me know if this answers your question. If not, please explain a bit more and what settings did you have for Clock! to enable screensaver override feature. We’ll take a look.

  42. 42
    Don Stevens Says:

Also, just FYI, if you have to make it a paid app, I will pay the buck or so for it, it is that good….

  43. 43
    Don Stevens Says:

OK, I am up to speed with the Auto-Lock feature that is in the settings, sorry, it does work to keep the clock on all the time. But I still need to have it start out in protrait mode. Great job to all BTW!

    Thanx,

    Don

  44. 44
    Anna Says:

Thanks Don. This app was meant to be a paid app. The original release date was delayed for 3 months (long story!) and in the end we were advised to release it for free.

It meant a lot to us that some people, like yourself, can recognise and appreciate the work we’ve done. We have invested quite a bit of effort and money into making this app. Though we are not making any money from it, the fact that we have now reached more than a million downloads is quite satisfying.

We’ll let you know as soon as we fixed the bug with starting in portrait mode.

    Dan van Says:

Thanks for creating such a cool looking app. Very intuitive interface – the best I’ve seen. I love the landscape Options screen and living in Australia, I appreciate the localised date display. Can I please suggest a couple of improvements in my wishlist…

    - Optional seconds display
    - Option to ‘favourite’ your preferred themes, so you can flick through your favoutites at will, without having to go through the entire list.
    - A feature of another clock app I like (Alarm Night Clock Lite – Hana Mobile) is a flash-light (bright screen).

    Great job.

    Thanks,
    Dan.

  46. 46
    Anna Says:

    Hi Dan,

    Thanks for your post.

We are working on phase 2 of Theme Clock and it will let users configure their favourite themes for sliding. We will consider optional seconds display and flash light feature depending on how our current schedule goes.

Thanks again for your suggestions. It is great for us to hear from our users!

    Anna Says:

    Hello dan55,

Thanks for your comment. Very glad you like Theme Clock.

We are currently working on the next version, which will give the option to adjust the dimmer brightness.

The theme locking is a great idea, we will add it to our feature list for future versions. Thanks for the suggestion!

As for the message option, unfortunately the UI won’t have any space for that because the extra space is reserved for a new feature.

The new version should be out shortly, might be a few weeks depending on Apple’s approval process (which now takes longer than before). We are very busy working on it. We hope this explains why we haven’t been as prompt as usual in replying on our FAQ. Apologies for that.

    dan55 Says:

    hi Anna,
thats great news – cant wait :)

btw: think there might be a slight bug with current build. it is todo with the ‘turn auto lock off’ feature. normally works fine, but if the phone shuts down due to low battery when you next run TC this feature doesnt work. if you then reboot phone, all is well again

    many thanks

    Anna Says:

    Hi again,

Very pleased to see your posts!

We’ve heard people saying the auto-lock feature is not working but we were not able to reproduce it. Thanks for pointing it out!

Why aren’t we selling the clock? It was suppose to be a paid app. We ran into a lot of trouble sorting out the developer program with Apple (I won’t go into the details). In the end we had to release it for free and because we couldn’t wait. The fact that you guys appreciate our product means a lot to us. We have put a lot of professional resources into making this app.

The next version of Theme Clock will have a multi alarm clock along with some other extra features and it will be our first paid app. Fingers crossed!

ps: the auto lock off feature also gets overwritten when there is a new sms message etc – would be cool if TC stayed in foreground and showed the sms message – but i realise that the new message might push TC to the background ?

    Hi,

I don’t know if anyone has the same problem with this app, but when I put my iPod in my dock at night and switch theme clock on it happens that after some time the menue pops up without anyone touching the iPod. I have NO idea how that happens, its a great app, but with this bug its useless for me.

Would be great if anyone could tell me how to get rid of this problem.

    thx

    Sebastian

  57. 57
    Anna Says:

    Hi Sebastian,

    This genuinely sounds strange.

Can you tell us which version of Theme Clock are you using and if it only happens in this version (if you used a previous version before)? Also, what OS and what generation of iPod are you using?

We will investigate how it happens and plan a fix for the next update.

  58. 58
    Anna Says:

    Hi Dan55,

We do wish to have beta testers. But how are we going to achieve that? I am not sure because the App Store does not allow beta releases. So we have to use our existing resources.

Thanks for another clue on the auto-lock issue. We now have a good idea on what causes the problem. We will include the fix in the next update.

  59. 59
    dan55 Says:

    hi Anna.

    Anna Says:

    Hi Dan55,

Thanks for the beta tester suggestion. We have been thinking about it and now are considering setting up a proper beta testing program for our future apps. Having beta testers for Theme Clock is cutting it a bit close to its launch deadline. We’ll see if it is possible for the versions after this one.

    Thanks again for the suggestions!

Hi, I’ve been trying to update to the new version on Appstore with no luck. First attempt, no change to original app, second attempt I removed and then reinstalled-still no change. I’m not getting the dimmer slider bar or the seasonal theme and I still get notification of the available update on the Appstore. Running a 3G iPhone. Any ideas? Thanks! Neil.

  68. 68
    Anna Says:

    Hi Neil,

I am impressed with the speedy update! The app just got approved about 1-2 hours before your post.

I have just downloaded it and it seems fine to me. I downloaded it via iTunes.

The reason you didn’t see the updated copy could be because the actual app is not propagated through as early as the status. Hence you are downloading the old version that is in the cache.

Can you search for Theme Clock Alarm (Free) on the app store and see if you see v2.0. If so, download it again.

Also, if you are downloading from iTunes. Please select Theme Clock Alarm (Free) on the Application tab before syching. We changed the name of the app and iTunes doesn’t seem to pick it up.

If it doesn’t work still, please let us know. We will investigate it further.

It would be nice to have user adjustable night silent start and stop times instead of the hard coded 7pm to 8am currently. I really like Theme Clock Alarm!

    Thanks,

  74. 74
    Anna Says:

    Thanks David.

The underline code is written to give ability to adjust the silent time, just no interface at the moment.

We are monitoring the downloads to see if it is practical to put further effort into Theme Clock Alarm (unless of course if there is a bug). There are a few cool features I would like to add to it. We enjoyed making theme clock and seeing all the positive responses. Unfortunately the downloads are not amazing and we have given priority to make other apps. We have a lot of exciting ideas and very little time.
